Hello!
ITTP onsite IntCertTEFL/TESOL trainees are mostly from Australia, Britain and N.America.
Citizens of Australia, Canada and the USA are given a 90 day free tourist visa upon arrival to the Czech Republic. There is no charge for this visa.
According to new Schengen laws after 90 days you are then expected to leave the country but in reality you are never hassled if you overstay your official tourist visa and we have received reports from trainees of being able to travel freely across European borders after this 90 day period has expired.
If you have a TEFL certificate and are employed by a school then you will be working on a work permit and staying here on a longer term visa - means you can travel freely and legally within Europe without needing to worry about possible Schengen restrictions, etc.
It is perfectly acceptable to begin teaching on your tourist visa while your work permit and long term visa are being processed.
You DON'T have to apply for your work visa from your home country.
The typical route is to arrive on a tourist visa, take your TEFL course and then begin teaching right after the course has finished up. Your work permit and work visa should then be ready within 2-3 months - Czech laws have recently been passed to make this process even easier for non-EU citizens.
ITTP provides visa support for trainees, grads and for the wider general public.
If you plan to stay longer than a year in Prague then we recommend getting a business license 'Zivnostensky List'. This means you can invoice clients directly and means you miss out the middle person (the language school).
Australian, British and N.American English teachers are still in high demand in the Czech Republic and other global locations.
No matter what you hear or have read (there is a lot of misinformation on some popular forums), it is possible for all EU and Non-EU citizens to get legal to teach English in the Czech Republic and you DON'T need to apply for the work visa in your country of origin. You do however need to apply for this visa in another country locally (a visa run), and popular destinations for this are notably Vienna, Bratislava and Dresden. Your school should assist you with the whole process.
ITTP always works with reputable schools which assist their teachers with the work visa and longer term visa process.
One of the requirements for obtaining the long-term visa is that you have a work permit and the work permit application and long-term visa application process go hand-in-hand.The work permit and visa are valid for 1 year and can then be prolonged every year if you choose to stay longer and not go the business license route.
Hezky den!/Lovely day!
Neville
